Cheap Minecraft Modpack Server Hosting: Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge

Running a modpack with friends is one of the best ways to play Minecraft, and one of the easiest ways to waste money on hosting. Modded servers crash for reasons that have nothing to do with price: the wrong loader, the wrong Java version, a client-only mod on the server, or simply too little RAM for a big pack. This guide explains the three main mod loaders, how to choose between them, how much server you actually need, and how to keep costs down without the crashes.

We run YN HOSTING, which offers Minecraft servers including dedicated Fabric, Forge and Modpacks plans, in Singapore and Frankfurt today with India and Ashburn (US) coming soon. The advice below applies whichever host you use.

The short answer

  • Playing a published modpack (CurseForge, Modrinth, FTB)? Use whatever loader the pack uses. You don't get to choose, and that's fine.
  • Building your own pack on a modern version (1.20.2+)? Choose NeoForge for big content and tech mods (Create, Mekanism-style mods), or Fabric for performance, QoL and lighter content.
  • Playing an older pack (1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2)? That's Forge territory, or Fabric if the pack is Fabric.

The three loaders explained

Forge

Forge has been the main mod loader since the early 2010s. Most classic modpacks, especially for 1.7.10, 1.12.2 and 1.16.5, run on Forge. It's still updated for current versions, but many big mod developers have moved their new versions to NeoForge.

Best for: older and legacy packs, and mods that never moved to NeoForge.

NeoForge

NeoForge started in 2023 as a fork of Forge, created by most of Forge's core team. For 1.20.1 it's almost identical to Forge. From 1.20.2 onwards the two have diverged, and a large share of popular mods now release for NeoForge first or only on newer versions.

Best for: big modern content packs and tech or automation packs on 1.20.2 and newer, including most current 1.21.x kitchen-sink packs.

Fabric

Fabric is a lightweight loader that updates to new Minecraft versions very quickly. It's the home of many performance mods such as Lithium, FerriteCore and C2ME, and lots of QoL mods. Most Fabric mods also need Fabric API installed. Quilt is a related loader that can run most Fabric mods.

Best for: lighter packs, performance-focused servers, new Minecraft versions shortly after release, and vanilla-plus survival.

Can you mix them?

Not directly. A Forge mod won't load on Fabric and vice versa. Compatibility layers such as Sinytra Connector (Fabric mods on NeoForge) exist, but they don't support every mod, so treat them as a last resort for a server people rely on.

Matching the Java version

The most common reason a fresh modded server won't even start is the wrong Java version. As a rule:

Minecraft version Java version
1.12.2 – 1.16.5 Java 8 (some 1.16.5 packs run on 11)
1.17.x Java 16 or 17
1.18 – 1.20.4 Java 17
1.20.5 – 1.21.x Java 21

Always check the pack's own instructions, because some packs pin a specific version. Using a much newer Java than the pack was tested on can cause crashes even if it starts.

How much RAM does a modpack server need?

Modpacks use far more memory than vanilla, mainly because of the number of mods and the amount of world data they generate.

Pack size Example Players Suggested RAM
Light (under ~80 mods) QoL, vanilla-plus, Fabric performance packs 2–8 4–6 GB
Medium (80–200 mods) Create-focused packs, adventure packs 2–8 6–8 GB
Large (200+ mods) ATM-style kitchen-sink, big tech packs 2–8 8–12 GB
Large, bigger group Any big pack 10+ 12 GB+

Two warnings: 1. More RAM isn't always better. Giving Java a huge heap can make garbage-collection pauses longer. Allocate what the pack needs plus some headroom, not every gigabyte you can find. 2. RAM won't fix a slow CPU. Minecraft's main tick loop runs on one thread. A fast modern CPU often matters more than extra memory for TPS.

Where cheap modpack hosting goes wrong

Client-only mods on the server

Mods like minimaps, shader loaders, JEI-style UI tweaks and sound mods often only run on the player's side. Putting them on the server can crash it at startup. Fix: use the pack's official server pack whenever there is one, rather than copying your client mods folder.

Version mismatch

Every player needs exactly the same pack version as the server. If you update the server, tell everyone to update too, and pin the version in your Discord.

World generation lag

Big packs add new biomes and structures, so exploring creates heavy load. Pre-generate the world with Chunky before you open the server, and set a world border.

Too little disk speed

Modded worlds grow quickly and save a lot of data. NVMe storage keeps autosaves and chunk loading smooth. All YN HOSTING servers use NVMe.

Step-by-step: setting up a modpack server

  1. Pick the right version of the pack and note its Minecraft version, loader and loader version.
  2. Choose the server type in your panel: Forge, NeoForge or Fabric, at the matching version. On YN HOSTING you set this on the Startup page; see changing version, gamemode and difficulty.
  3. Download the server pack from the pack's CurseForge or Modrinth page, or the pack's official site.
  4. Upload it with SFTP (uploading files with SFTP), or use your panel's file manager. Make sure mods/, config/ and any defaultconfigs/ or kubejs/ folders end up in the server root.
  5. Set the Java version to match the table above.
  6. Start the server, accept the EULA, and watch the live console for errors.
  7. Pre-generate with Chunky and set automatic restarts (automatic restarts).
  8. Share the address with your players (find and share your server address).

More detail on adding individual mods is in installing mods and plugins.

Reading a crash report

When a modded server crashes, the answer is usually in crash-reports/ or logs/latest.log. Look for: - "Mod X requires Y": a missing dependency. Install it. - "Attempted to load class ... for invalid dist DEDICATED_SERVER": a client-only mod. Remove it from the server. - "Unsupported class file major version": wrong Java version. - OutOfMemoryError: not enough RAM, or a memory leak. Upgrade or profile with Spark.

How to keep modpack hosting cheap

  • Start with the RAM the pack needs, not the biggest plan. Upgrade later if your host allows it without losing your world (upgrade your RAM or player slots).
  • Add performance mods where the pack allows, such as FerriteCore and ModernFix.
  • Pre-generate and use a world border to avoid paying for CPU spikes.
  • Pick the location closest to your players, so you don't need more hardware to hide distance lag (region and lag guide).
  • Look for included DDoS protection, so it isn't an add-on. YN HOSTING includes Gcore and Zero Lag Protection on every server, for almost lag-free play during attacks.

FAQ

Is NeoForge better than Forge?

For new versions (1.20.2+), most big mods now target NeoForge, so it's usually the better choice there. For older packs, use Forge.

Is Fabric faster than Forge?

Fabric packs are often lighter, and Fabric has excellent performance mods. But a server's speed depends mostly on the mods in the pack and the CPU, not the loader itself.

Can I run Forge mods on Fabric?

No. Each mod is built for a specific loader. Some compatibility layers exist, but they don't support every mod.

How much RAM do I need for All the Mods–style packs?

Usually 8–12 GB for a small group, more for larger groups. Check the pack's own recommendation.

Why does my modpack server crash on startup?

The most common causes are a client-only mod on the server, the wrong Java version, or a missing dependency. Check logs/latest.log.

Do my friends need the same mods?

Yes. Every player needs the exact same pack and version as the server, apart from purely client-side extras like shaders.
