Best Minecraft Server Hosting in Singapore and Asia (Low Ping Guide)

If you play Minecraft in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam or India, you have probably joined a server that felt fine on paper and terrible in practice: blocks reappearing after you break them, mobs teleporting, PvP hits that never land. Nine times out of ten the problem isn't the RAM or the plugin list. It's distance. This guide explains how to choose Minecraft hosting for players in Asia, what really controls your ping, how much hardware you need, and what to check before you pay.

We run YN HOSTING, which has Minecraft servers in Singapore and Frankfurt today, with India and Ashburn (US) coming soon. We've written this as a checklist you can use with any host.

Why location matters more than specs

Every action you take in Minecraft is a round trip: your client sends it to the server, the server processes it, and the result comes back. Light in fibre travels roughly 200 km per millisecond, and real routes are never straight lines. A player in Kuala Lumpur connecting to a server in Europe is sending packets more than 10,000 km each way, so ping in the 150–250 ms range is normal. No amount of RAM fixes that.

Host the server close to most of your players and that same player can often see ping in the low tens of milliseconds. Your actual numbers depend on your ISP, routing and Wi-Fi, so always test before you commit.

Why Singapore is the default for Southeast Asia

Singapore is the region's main interconnection hub. Most large ISPs in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines peer there directly, which usually means short, direct routes. For a mixed SEA community it is normally the fairest single location.

What about India?

Players in India often connect to Singapore with acceptable ping, but routing varies a lot between ISPs and cities, and some routes detour badly. An India location will usually serve Indian players better. YN HOSTING's India location is coming soon; until then, Singapore is the closest live option for most Indian groups. If your group is mostly in India, check our region and lag guide and test ping to Singapore from each player's connection.

Mixed Asia and Europe groups

If half your players are in Europe and half in Asia, no single location will feel great for everyone. Options: - Pick the location closest to the majority, or to your most active players. - Run two servers, one in Singapore and one in Frankfurt, and link them with a proxy such as Velocity if you want shared chat or a hub. Note that a proxy adds complexity and doesn't remove the distance between a player and the backend server they're on.

How to test ping before you buy

  1. Ask the host for a test IP or looking-glass address for each location.
  2. Have every regular player run ping (Windows: ping -n 20 address) at the time you usually play. Evening congestion is real.
  3. Look at the average and the jitter (how much the numbers jump around), not just the best result.
  4. Check packet loss. Even 1–2% loss feels worse in Minecraft than a few extra milliseconds.

Minecraft Java's server list shows ping too, but it's a rough guide. A proper ping test is more reliable.

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

RAM depends on player count, view distance, and above all on mods. As a starting point:

Server type Players Suggested RAM
Vanilla or Paper, small friends group 2–10 2–4 GB
Paper with plugins, community SMP 10–40 4–8 GB
Light modpack (Fabric/QoL) 2–10 4–6 GB
Large modpack (Create, ATM-style kitchen sink) 2–10 8–12 GB
Large modpack, bigger group 10+ 12 GB+

Don't give the Java process every last megabyte of your plan. The server needs some headroom outside the heap. If your host lets you upgrade later without losing your world, start small and scale. See upgrading your RAM or player slots.

CPU matters more than you think

The main Minecraft server thread runs world ticks on one core. A server with a fast modern CPU will hold 20 TPS (ticks per second) much better than one with lots of slow cores. Ask your host which CPU generation they use. If TPS drops while RAM and CPU usage look low, it's usually a single-thread bottleneck: run a profiler like Spark to see what's using tick time.

Storage

World saves, chunk loading and backups all hit the disk. NVMe storage makes chunk loading and autosaves noticeably smoother than SATA SSDs, and much smoother than hard drives. Every YN HOSTING server runs on NVMe.

Java or Bedrock?

  • Java Edition (PC) supports Paper, Purpur, plugins and modloaders like Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Default port 25565 (TCP).
  • Bedrock Edition (mobile, console, Windows) is popular in Southeast Asia because many players are on phones. Default port 19132 (UDP).
  • Both: the Geyser plugin lets Bedrock players join a Java server, and Floodgate lets them join without a Java account. It works well for most survival servers but doesn't support every Java mod or mechanic.

If your friends are a mix of PC and mobile, a Paper server with Geyser is a common setup. See switching to Paper and adding plugins.

DDoS protection is not optional

Minecraft servers are one of the most common DDoS targets, often from a player who got banned five minutes earlier. When an attack hits an unprotected server, everyone times out. Look for: - Always-on filtering, not "we'll null-route you if you're attacked". - Filtering that understands game traffic, so real players aren't blocked during an attack. - No extra charge for protection.

YN HOSTING servers are protected by Gcore and Zero Lag Protection by dataforest, designed to keep play almost lag-free even while an attack is being filtered. Our DDoS protection article explains how it works.

Tips to keep ping and TPS healthy

  • Lower view distance and simulation distance in server.properties. A simulation distance of 6–8 is plenty for most servers. See editing your server config.
  • Pre-generate your world with the Chunky plugin or mod, so players exploring don't force live world generation.
  • Use Paper (or Purpur) instead of vanilla for plugin servers. It's much more efficient.
  • Schedule restarts for long-running modded servers. See automatic restarts.
  • Play on wired connections where you can. Wi-Fi adds jitter that looks like server lag.

What to check before you pay

  1. Is there a server in or near your region? Singapore for SEA; India for India when available.
  2. Is the CPU modern, and is it named?
  3. Is storage NVMe?
  4. Is DDoS protection included and always on?
  5. Can you choose the server type (Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) and change versions easily? See changing version, gamemode and difficulty.
  6. Do you get SFTP access and a live console? See uploading files with SFTP.
  7. Is support available when your players are online? Ours is 24/7, including on Discord.
  8. Is the real monthly price clear, including after any first-month discount?

FAQ

What is the best server location for Minecraft in Southeast Asia?

Singapore, for most groups. It's the region's main network hub, so most ISPs in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines route there directly.

Is Singapore good for Minecraft players in India?

Often, but it depends on your ISP and city. Test ping from every player's connection first. An India location will usually be better for India-only groups.

How much RAM do I need for a Minecraft server with friends?

2–4 GB for vanilla or Paper with a few friends, 4–6 GB for a light modpack, and 8 GB or more for large modpacks.

Can Bedrock players on phones join my Java server?

Yes, with the Geyser plugin (and Floodgate if they don't own Java). It works well for most survival and minigame servers.

Why is my server lagging when CPU and RAM aren't maxed?

Usually because Minecraft's main thread runs on one core. Use a profiler like Spark, lower simulation distance and pre-generate your world.

Will a closer server remove all lag?

It removes the delay caused by distance, but your Wi-Fi, ISP routing and the server's own TPS still matter.
