Cheap DDoS-Protected VPS for Game Servers in Frankfurt (2026 Guide)

Managed game hosting is the easy road: pick a game, click install, play. But sooner or later a lot of server owners want more control. Maybe you run three small servers and a Discord bot, want a custom panel, or need a database next to your FiveM server. That's when a VPS starts to make sense.

This guide covers when a VPS is the better choice, how to size one for popular games, what DDoS protection actually needs to do for game traffic, and what to check before you buy. We run YN HOSTING, so keep that in mind. The sizing advice works on any provider.

Managed game server or VPS?

Managed game server VPS
Setup One click, game panel included You install the OS tools, SteamCMD or a panel yourself
Control Game files, configs, mods Full root access to the whole machine
Run several things One game per plan Several game servers, bots, databases and websites on one box
Maintenance Done for you You handle updates, firewall and backups
Best for Communities that just want to play Tinkerers, networks, devs, multi-server setups

A simple rule: if you only need one game server and don't want to touch Linux, a managed plan is cheaper in time. If you're comfortable with SSH, or you want to run more than one thing, a VPS gives you more for the money.

How much VPS do you need?

Most game servers care far more about single-core CPU speed than core count, because the main game loop runs on one thread. A fast core that boosts high beats many slow ones. RAM decides how many players, mods and plugins you can fit.

Use Suggested vCPU Suggested RAM Notes
Discord bot, small website, proxy 1 1 GB Plenty for lightweight services
Vanilla or Paper Minecraft, 10–20 players 2 4 GB Pre-generate your world to cut CPU spikes
Modded Minecraft (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge) 3–4 6–8 GB Big modpacks want 8 GB or more
CS2 or CS:GO community server 2–3 4 GB Add a core per extra server you run
Classic CS 1.6 / Source servers 1–2 1–2 GB You can stack several on one VPS
Rust, 50–100 players with Oxide plugins 4–5 8–12 GB Rust is the heaviest common game here
FiveM with ESX or QBCore plus MySQL 3–4 6–8 GB The database lives on the same box
A small network (2–4 servers plus bots) 6–8 12–24 GB Leave about 20% headroom for spikes

Storage matters too. NVMe drives load chunks, maps and saves much faster than older SSDs or hard drives, and Rust or modded Minecraft worlds grow fast. Plan for at least double your current world size.

Why DDoS protection matters more on a VPS

Game servers are a favourite DDoS target. A rival server, a banned player or a bored kid can rent an attack for a few dollars. On managed game hosting the provider usually tunes the filtering for each game. On a VPS your IP is open to anything, so the network protection in front of it is what keeps you online.

Things to look for:

  • Always-on filtering, so attacks are caught without waiting for someone to switch protection on.
  • Game-aware protection for UDP traffic. Most games (CS2, Rust, Valheim, Palworld, FiveM voice) use UDP, which is exactly what most attacks flood. Generic web-only protection doesn't help here.
  • Low added latency. Filtering that adds 20–30 ms defeats the point of a nearby server.
  • No surprise fees for being attacked.

Every YN HOSTING VPS comes with DDoS protection by Gcore and Zero Lag Protection, the same protection our game servers use. You can read how it works in our DDoS protection article.

Why Frankfurt?

Frankfurt is one of Europe's biggest internet exchange hubs, so a server there gets short routes to most of the continent. Players in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland and the Nordics usually see low ping, and the UK, Spain and Italy stay comfortable too. If most of your players are in Europe, Frankfurt is a safe default.

If your community is in Southeast Asia, our managed game servers also run in Singapore, and India and Ashburn (US East) are coming soon. Our region guide helps you pick.

YN HOSTING VPS plans

All plans include Performance vCPU (boost up to 5 GHz), DDR4 RAM, NVMe storage, 1 Gbps unlimited bandwidth and DDoS protection by Gcore and Zero Lag Protection.

Plan vCPU RAM NVMe Price
VPS-1 1 1 GB 25 GB €2.49/mo
VPS-2 2 2 GB 50 GB €2.99/mo
VPS-3 3 4 GB 100 GB €4.49/mo
VPS-4 4 6 GB 150 GB €6.99/mo
VPS-5 5 8 GB 200 GB €8.99/mo
VPS-6 6 12 GB 250 GB €12.99/mo
VPS-7 7 16 GB 300 GB €17.99/mo
VPS-8 8 24 GB 200 GB €24.99/mo
VPS-9 8 24 GB 400 GB €29/mo

Quick picks: VPS-3 for a Minecraft or CS2 server, VPS-5 for modded Minecraft, FiveM or a Rust server, and VPS-6 or larger for a small network. See all plans on the VPS page.

Rather not manage Linux? Our managed game servers install in minutes, and new customers on monthly billing get their first month for $1 with the code shown on each plan card (format YN1-<price>, for example YN1-3.49 for CS2 Starter).

Before you buy any VPS: a checklist

  1. Check the CPU model or boost clock, not just the vCPU count.
  2. Ask what the DDoS protection covers. UDP game traffic should be filtered, always on, with no attack fees.
  3. Ping the location first. Use the provider's looking glass or test IP from where your players are.
  4. Look for NVMe and enough space for backups.
  5. Plan your backups. On a VPS they're your job: schedule off-server copies of worlds and databases.
  6. Lock it down. Use SSH keys, disable password login, and open only the ports your games need.
  7. Check support. When something breaks at midnight, a fast reply matters. YN HOSTING support runs 24/7 on Discord.

FAQ

Can I run more than one game server on one VPS? Yes. As long as you have the CPU and RAM, you can run several servers on different ports. Many owners run a lobby, a survival server and a Discord bot on one plan.

Is a VPS cheaper than managed game hosting? Per GB of RAM, usually yes. But you pay with your own time for setup, updates and backups.

Do I need a control panel? No, but free panels like Pterodactyl make running several game servers much easier.

Will DDoS protection add lag? Good protection filters traffic without adding noticeable latency. That's the point of Zero Lag Protection on our network.
