DDoS-Protected Game Server Hosting: How Gcore and Zero Lag Protection Keep Your Server Online
If you run a public game server long enough, someone will try to knock it offline. A rival community, a banned player, or a bored kid with a booter service can flood your IP with junk traffic, and suddenly everyone is rubber-banding, timing out or getting kicked. That's a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack, and it's the number one reason community servers lose players overnight.
At YN HOSTING (Your Next Network), every server ships with DDoS protection by Gcore and our Zero Lag Protection layer, at no extra cost. This guide explains what attacks actually look like, how protection works, and what you can do on your side to stay online.
What a DDoS attack does to a game server
Game servers are unusually easy targets:
- They run on UDP. CS2, Rust, Valheim, Palworld, Garry's Mod and Minecraft Bedrock all rely heavily on UDP, which has no handshake, so spoofed floods are cheap to send.
- The IP is public. Server lists, Discord invites and connect strings all expose it.
- Players notice instantly. A web page that loads two seconds slower is annoying; a game server that drops packets is unplayable.
Common attack types we see against game hosts:
| Attack | What it looks like in-game |
|---|---|
| UDP flood | Massive packet loss, everyone times out at once |
| Amplification (DNS, NTP, memcached) | Huge bandwidth spikes that saturate the connection |
| Query/handshake floods | Server list shows the server offline, new players can't join |
| Application-layer floods | Fake players or connection spam that eats CPU and slots |
How DDoS protection by Gcore works
Gcore filters traffic at the network edge before it reaches your server. Clean player traffic is passed through; attack traffic is identified by its patterns (volume, source, protocol behaviour) and dropped. Because filtering happens upstream, your server's own connection and CPU aren't the thing absorbing the flood.
What that means for you:
- Always-on. There's no "attack mode" you need to toggle and no ticket you need to open mid-attack.
- No extra fee. Protection is included on every game server and Performance VPS plan.
- Same IP. You keep your address, so your server-list entries and Discord connect info stay valid.
What Zero Lag Protection adds
Blocking an attack is only half the job. Badly tuned filtering can add delay or drop real players along with the bad traffic. Zero Lag Protection is our layer focused on keeping legitimate gameplay traffic smooth while filtering is active, so players stay connected and in sync even while an attack is being absorbed.
Region matters too
Protection keeps you online; picking the right region keeps you responsive. YN HOSTING runs live locations in:
- Frankfurt, Germany for players across Europe
- Singapore for Southeast Asia and much of Asia-Pacific
India and Ashburn (US East) are coming soon. Pick the location closest to most of your players; everything in this guide applies in every region.
Hardening checklist for server owners
Network protection does the heavy lifting, but a few habits make your server much harder to disrupt:
- Don't publish your panel or SSH ports. Keep admin access behind strong passwords and, on a VPS, key-based SSH.
- Keep the server and plugins updated. Many "crashes" blamed on DDoS are actually exploits in outdated mods or plugins.
- Use whitelists for private servers. Minecraft whitelists, Rust/CS2 passwords and FiveM allowlists stop junk joins.
- Rate-limit RCON and query. Change default RCON ports and use long passwords.
- Install anti-bot plugins. On Minecraft networks, a connection-throttling or anti-bot plugin handles fake-player floods at the application layer.
- Keep backups. If someone does get in, a recent backup gets you running again in minutes.
- Tell your community. If players see lag, ask them to report it in Discord with a timestamp; it helps us check filtering logs fast.

FAQ
Is DDoS protection included or an add-on? Included on every game server and Performance VPS plan, with no setup fee.
Will protection add ping? Zero Lag Protection is designed to keep legitimate player traffic flowing smoothly while filtering runs. Choosing the region closest to your players matters most for ping.
Can I run my own anti-cheat or anti-bot plugins? Yes. Network-level protection and in-game plugins work together.
What if my server still has problems during an attack? Open a ticket or ping us in Discord; support is there 24/7.
Try it for $1
New customers get their first month for $1 on monthly billing. Every plan card shows its code in the format YN1-<plan price> (for example, a $2.49 plan uses YN1-2.49). Enter it at checkout.
